How To Approach

Start the convo with

  1. Compliment - Open up with a compliment about the person
  2. Question - Ask the person a question, I normally make it related to the compliment
  3. Relate - If you can relate at all, then tell a super short story of your own.

IMPORTANT (don't dwell on yourself for too long because that can easily make someone not want to talk anymore, even if they are enjoying the interaction.)

Here’s how it’d look like in a bookstore

  1. Compliment - “I gotta say, I loooove your sweater”
    1. BODY LANGUAGE > Eye contact and a smile (if eye contact makes you nervous, look at the nose instead)
    2. Pro Tip > Hold your vowels to seem a bit more playful and welcoming > EX. “I loooove your sweater”
  2. Question - “Is it comfortable? I need to know ‘cause I plan on copying your style”
    1. BODY LANGUAGE > A slight chuckle to seem friendly
    2. Pro Tip > I sometimes like to add a joke to keep the convo playful > “I need to know ‘cause I plan on copying your style”
  3. Relate - “See I used to have a comfort sweater SPECIFICALLY for the winter but I ruined it in the dryer.”

After this you can ask another question to get them to talk more until you find a topic that can easily be dug into more. It's hard to keep a convo about a sweater going. It might be easier if you were in a clothing store.

  1. Question - “Do you come here often?”
    1. Response - “Yea, I love the atmosphere here a lot.”
  2. Question - “Really? I must’ve missed you before, my name is _____”
    1. Response - “Nice to meet you! I’m John!”
  3. Question - “So what do you like to read?”
    1. Pro Tip > Here you tailor your questions to the environment and try to find strong similarities - since both of you are in a book store in this scenario, the question, “So what do you like to read?”, doesn’t come from nowhere

When you get into a topic that is easier for you to dive deeper into, keep asking questions that target the person’s experiences, feelings, or beliefs.

Also not every compliment is going to lead into a full on convo. It's a numbers game. Keep putting out positive energy and giving compliments to find people you really click with.
